Problem Note 47798: PROC SEVERITY returns an error when run in SAS® Enterprise Guide® or any other non-DMS or non-batch environment

DetailsHotfixAboutRate It

If the SEVERITY procedure is run in an enterprise environment, such as through a code window in SAS Enterprise Guide, rather than in Display Manager (DMS) or batch mode, then the following error results:

ERROR: [INTERNAL ERROR] Please contact SAS Technical Support to report the following error message: Cannot obtain a filename to store function item-store.

PROC SEVERITY returns this error because it is unable to create the item store file due to permission issues when run via the workspace server.

If you are running SAS/ETS® 9.3, then you can circumvent the problem by adding the undocumented NOITEMSTORE option in the PROC SEVERITY statement, as show in this example:

proc severity data=mydata noitemstore; loss y; dist _predefined_; run;

If you are running SAS/ETS 12.1, then the NOITEMSTORE option is no longer supported and cannot be used to circumvent the problem.

If you are running PROC SEVERITY in the z/OS operating environment and observe the aforementioned error, then refer to SAS Note 46463 "The SEVERITY procedure returns the error 'Cannot obtain a filename to store function item-store'" for additional information.
